Abstract. I will start with a detailed discussion of the dynamics of a coral-algal-grazer model that exhibits multiple stable states and regime shifts. This will lead naturally to a discussion of the dynamics of regime shifts in ecology and time scales in ecology. I will focus on some of the underlying mathematical issues concerning the form of regime shifts. I will finish with issues of detecting early warning signs of potential regime shifts.
