Full Stack Software Engineer wanted. Remote work. Flexible hours. Industry-competitive pay. Six-month engagement with a leading academic nonprofit research institution. When successful, the project will advance academic collaboration across both the global north and global south.

Position Background:

Over the last 38 years, the Santa Fe Institute (SFI) has developed a unique reputation within academia for our ability to blend unyielding intellectual rigor with a maverick disregard for disciplinary boundaries. Rolling Stone magazine has called us, “[A] Justice League of renegade geeks, where teams of scientists from disparate fields study the Big Questions.” Pulitzer Prize winning novelist Cormac McCarthy’s comments on SFI can be found here. SFI is an independent non-profit (501.c.3) research institute. Our science is powered by 12 resident faculty4 fractal faculty18 resident fellows, and over 110 external faculty. Through our Miller Scholars Program we also engage with novelists, science fiction writers, and biographers. Working through the lens of complexity science, SFI has made major contributions to fields as varied as network science, economics, physics, computational modeling, scaling theory, collective intelligence, and many others.

The pandemic lockdowns spurred a wave of experiments using web-based technologies to convene members of our geographically dispersed community. We have since launched a technology development project to solidify the insights of those experiments. Called the Arch, this project leverages open-source software packages to optimize customization while minimizing maintenance and scratch development. In addition to facilitating connections within our existing community of thinkers, SFI plans to use this software to offer new engagement opportunities to thinkers across the global south.

Your Role and Responsibilities:

You will be part of a team whose mission is to prototype, test, and release new technologies to improve research and collaboration for a global community of academic researchers. As a Full Stack Software Engineer, you will participate in building a large-scale React application with high standards of code quality. You will collaborate with the SFI Arch team, a multi-disciplinary team of developers, designers, stakeholders, and researchers, to bring new application features to life. If you are self-motivated, curious, and love to code, this is an excellent opportunity to contribute to ongoing innovative development initiatives.
