Abstract.  Although not widely recognized, music had a significant effect on science and the development of scientific concepts from ancient Greece to the present. This talk will focus on three seminal examples in the encounter between music and science: Johannes Kepler using new astronomical observations to find the "song of the Earth"; Isaac Newton imposing the musical octave on the spectrum; Max Planck experimenting with harmoniums and choruses before turning to black body radiation.
