Literary storytelling can easily digest some kinds of complexity, and convey them in their complexity to the reader without the reader necessarily even being aware that cognitive heavy-lifting is being done. But other kinds resist the linear sequencing of narrative almost completely, or require sly and oblique strategies. A swift lunchtime tour of an ad hoc taxonomy, based on FS's experience as both writer and reader.
