Towards a more substantive account of cities

AuthorsMaurice Bokanga

SFI REU Final Presentation

Today, cities have their limits drawn by arbitrary administrative decisions. This leads to a good deal of ambiguity when attempting to compare cities with each other in a systematic manner. In this study we use massive amounts of mobile phone data collected from Senegal to track the networks and flows of people to further understand the actual structure of cities. Based on this knowledge, we will attempt to craft a more accurate definition of cities and demonstrate that our definition is more useful in predicting the behavior and movement of people within a particular city
