About the Pequod Project

The Pequod is the Institute's new invitation-only social club. Pequod guests view the identification of complexity’s universal generative mechanisms as the ultimate White Whale. The Pequod hosts club-specific events geared towards exposing guests to complexity science and its real-world applications. The Pequod also arranges for select guests to attend other Santa Fe Institute meetings. 


About the Position

The Manager will facilitate all aspects of Pequod events, from atmosphere to experience, guiding conversation in small groups, building relationships, and developing an understanding of guests’ interests in SFI. This position also curates, stewards, and logs the interactions of Pequod guests and other donors with the Institute. The Manager will be communicative and reliable, providing swift and thorough follow-up to guest inquiries. Candidates should be intellectually curious, sociable, sensitive to social cues from a wide-variety of personality types, detail-oriented, responsible, and enjoy working as part of a team. Good judgment is essential. The ideal candidate will be socially engaging, hard-working, and fluent in a compelling body of knowledge from philosophy, literature, or the natural or social sciences.

This is a manager-level position within SFI’s Office of Applied Complexity. In addition to the Applied Complexity team, the Pequod Manager will work closely with staff from the President’s Office as well as Finance, Events, and Visitor Management.

  1. A one-page cover letter, which broadly demonstrates the applicant’s qualifications for the position, as well their motivation to help others explore complexity science.
  2. A one-page statement of intellectual depth, which (i) clearly states one body of knowledge in which the applicant possesses some mastery, and (ii) explains why they believe that area of intellectual inquiry is fascinating.
  3. A standard resume.
  4. Two professional references* (who can attest to the applicant’s workplace responsibility), and one intellectual reference (who can attest to the applicant’s intellectual curiosity).
