BlueMountain Capital Management names Chair of SFI Board of Trustees Michael Mauboussin first Director of Research

This July, Michael Mauboussin, Chair of SFI's Board of Trustees, joins the BlueMountain Capital Management, LLC (“BlueMountain”) in the newly created position Director of Research. BlueMountain is a private absolute return investment firm with $22 billion in assets.

A highly-regarded research analyst known for his expertise in corporate valuation, investment process, market inefficiencies, and behavioral economics, Mauboussin is a leader in applying principles and models of complexity science to financial and business decision-making.

He is the author of The Success Equation: Untangling Skill and Luck in Business, Sports, and Investing (Harvard Business Review Press, 2012), Think Twice: Harnessing the Power of Counterintuition (Harvard Business Press, 2009) and More Than You Know: Finding Financial Wisdom in Unconventional Places-Updated and Expanded (New York: Columbia Business School Publishing, 2008).

Mauboussin reports to SFI Trustee Andrew Feldstein, BlueMountain’s CEO and Co-Chief Investment Officer, and is working with BlueMountain’s investment professionals to enhance the firm’s investment process, help drive its idea generation, and increase interdisciplinary collaboration.

“We are thrilled that Michael Mauboussin will be joining BlueMountain. He will bring exceptional intellectual capital to our firm. His experience, creativity, and energy will make us better investors and will create significant value for our clients,” says Feldstein.

“BlueMountain is a firm with a well-deserved reputation for its sophisticated approach to interdisciplinary investing, as well as a deep commitment to excellence in client service,” says Mauboussin. “I am excited to be working alongside the firm’s professionals to further enhance our collective ability to deliver strong performance for investors.”

“It is wonderful that two such important members of the SFI community will be working together at BlueMountain Capital. I consider Michael and Andrew very sophisticated thinkers in taking complexity science into domains of significant practical importance and value for society. Both Blue Mountain Capital and SFI will be made stronger through this collaboration” said David Krakauer, SFI President and William H. Miller Professor of Complex Systems.

Prior to joining BlueMountain, Mauboussin had been Head of Global Financial Strategies at Credit Suisse since 2013, where earlier in his career he had been an analyst and, subsequently, Chief U.S. Investment Strategist. From 2004 to 2013, he was Chief Investment Strategist at Legg Mason Capital Management. He is a former president of the Consumer Analyst Group of New York and was named to the Institutional Investor All-America Research Team and The Wall Street Journal All-Star survey on multiple occasions. Mauboussin has been an adjunct professor of finance at Columbia Business School since 1993 and is on the faculty of the Heilbrunn Center for Graham and Dodd Investing. He is also co-author, with Alfred Rappaport, of Expectations Investing: Reading Stock Prices for Better Returns (Harvard Business School Press, 2001).
