Three of the Institute's trustees are on the board of a new incentive prize that rewards compelling research to understand aging.

The Palo Alto Longevity Prize, launched this week, offers two prizes of $500,000 each. The first will be awarded to a research team that restores vitality measures in an aging mammal to those of a young adult; the second, to a team that can significantly extend a mammalian lifespan beyond published norms.

Reese Jones, Leighton Read, and Graham Spencer, who serve on SFI's Board of Trustees, will advise the operation of the longevity prize competition during its timeline from September 2014 to September 2018.

"Prizes such as this have a track record of stimulating and focusing interest on hard problems," says Read. "I'm sure the Longevity Prize will accomplish this in a way that could have broad impact on human length and quality of life."
