Mathematics in the 21st Century: Shall They Be Different?

Seminar

October 19, 2012
3:30 PM
Noyce Conference Room

Pierre Cartier (Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques)

Abstract:  I shall first review the heritage of the "short 20th century" in mathematics. A major success in the first half of this century was the appearance of the encyclopedic textbook by Bourbaki, putting in action the Hilbert's programme.  I shall explain how it changed deeply our global perception of mathematics.  But in the second half, a rather unexpected development was propelled by the growth of computer science.  I shall describe the new challenges and venture to describe how they could be met in the 21th century.

Purpose: Research Collaboration
