Abstract.  The HIV epidemic has had devastating domestic and global impact.  This presentation constitutes a brief tour through my program of research, which has focused on using theory to understand the dynamics of HIV risk and prevention behavior, and through that understanding, to design, implement, and rigorously evaluate theory-based HIV prevention interventions.  Specific reference will be made to the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills model of HIV risk and prevention behavior, and to correlational and experimental research using the model.  Several large-scale, theory-based intervention trials which we have conducted in the US and in international settings with the goal of changing HIV risk behavior in seropositive and in seronegative populations will be described in some detail.
